Man Utd make decision on signing Jarrad Branthwaite
Manchester United have decided whether or not to make a move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite after recently holding talks with him.
The England international recently returned from another lengthy spell on the sidelines. Branthwaite was one of the breakout defenders in the Premier League in 2023/24, but he has struggled for fitness since.
Man Utd considered the 23-year-old their top defensive target in the summer of 2024. However, they refused to meet Everton's hefty price tag of around €85 million and eventually gave up after making a couple of low-ball bids.
Although transfer speculation has been relatively muted because of Branthwaite's injury problems over the past two seasons, there have still been some rumours. Last summer, Man Utd and Chelsea were both linked with a move for the defender.
In recent weeks, the Red Devils have once again been associated with Branthwaite, prompting Ben Jacobs to reveal that a meeting with the player's camp took place in February.
Man Utd make Branthwaite decision
During this meeting, Branthwaite's representatives signalled that the defender would be interested in a move to Old Trafford. However, with the player fully focused on getting back to his best, it was too early to discuss the finer details of a transfer.
Now, former Man Utd coach Mick Brown claims that Man Utd have made their decision on whether or not to actively pursue a deal. Speaking to Football Insider, Brown states that the Red Devils will not act on their interest because they are more focused on the midfield.
"I can’t see Branthwaite leaving Everton any time soon," he said. "There’s been talk about him for a long time, but I remember saying before he picked up his first injury, he still has a lot to prove.
"He was building a strong reputation for himself, but he’s got to prove he can stay fit, get back to the level he was at before, and convince everybody he’s capable of going on. Particularly teams like Man United, who I’m told have backed away a bit from their interest because he’s hardly played so far this season.
"They’ve been watching him for a while, but they’re not going to make a move when he’s hardly played, because you don’t know how he’ll be when he’s back fit. His focus has to be on getting back into the Everton team for a sustained period and proving to everybody that he can still do a job."
