Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has agreed an €80 million-per-season contract with Inter Miami, according to a sensational report.

The Brazil international is due to leave the Red Devils this summer. Though Casemiro has remained an important part of the team, it was decided that it would be best to part ways after this season.

The 34-year-old has agreed to waive an automatic contract extension that would have been triggered after a certain number of appearances in order to be able to freely choose his next club.

For Man Utd, Casemiro's departure will mean freeing up a massive salary. This will, in turn, give the club more flexibility in the transfer market as they seek to revamp their midfield with several high-profile signings.

At this stage, it is unclear where Casemiro will end up this summer. He has been linked with returns to Brazil, Portugal and moves to Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer. One report, though, claims to know the Brazil captain's next destination.

Casemiro "agrees" Miami deal

A stunning report from Brazilian outlet RTI Esporte asserts that Casemiro has greenlit a move to David Beckham's Inter Miami. On the face of it, this may not be a surprise.

After all, the Herons are known to be interested in the midfielder. The Athletic recently confirmed that Miami were considering a move for the veteran, who was recently spotted visiting the city.

However, the details of the report are borderline outrageous. It is claimed that Casemiro has already signed a contract through 2028 with Miami, which will see his Man Utd salary doubled!

Specifically, it is stated that Casemiro is due to earn close to €80 million per season at Miami, which would put him above Lionel Messi on the Herons' payroll. Club owner Jorge Mas recently stated that he pays Messi up to $80m (€68m) annually.

"Furthermore, the contract includes bonuses for titles won and an important differentiating factor: a share of the profits from licensed products featuring his image," the report claims.

It is probably fair to assume that this is wide of the mark. Why would Miami pay Casemiro more than Messi? This in itself is a ludicrous suggestion, but let's actually dig into the quirks of MLS to show why it's simply not possible.

Currently, Miami are not in a position to agree such a deal. Given the money involved, Casemiro would be a Designated Player (DP) on a contract that could not be bought down using allocation money.

Miami, however, already have their permitted three DPs in Lionel Messi, Rodrigo de Paul and German Berterame, who are also on lucrative deals that can't be converted into a different roster designation.

Therefore, the only way to free up a spot for Casemiro would be via a sale. They're obviously not going to sell Messi or his close friend De Paul, who only joined in a €15m deal in the offseason.

This leaves Berterame, who also just joined for €12.6m. The Mexico international would be the most expendable, and he hasn't had a great start to the season, but selling him to make room for a 34-year-old midfielder would certainly be an, uhm, interesting decision.

Because of this, it is also doubtful that Casemiro could already have "signed" his contract with Miami. This would make it legally binding and put the club in a tricky situation in the summer.

They would have to unregister one of their current DPs before being able to use Casemiro. You simply can't have four DPs. The LA Galaxy famously had to terminate Giovani dos Santos' contract in 2019 to be roster compliant ahead of the new season.

So, while Miami could technically agree a pre-contract with Casemiro in principle, they would be required to already have their next move lined up, and it is difficult to believe that they have already decided to offload Berterame after nine games.
