Man Utd 'concerned' with sudden issue set to cause major dent in summer transfer plans
Manchester United are set to face a major issue this summer which hand the club a substantial unwanted cost and hinder their transfer plans.
United are expected to spend heavily this summer as they prepare to return to Champions League football after their turnaround under Michael Carrick which sees the club sitting third in the Premier League with seven games remaining.
However, the club’s return to the Champions League may prove to be a double-edged sword, with forgotten goalkeeper Andre Onana set to be handed a wage increase if United qualify for Europe.
Onana has been on loan at Trabzonspor this season but the Turkish side have not got an option to make the deal permanent, nor are they likely to have the budget to retain the 29-year-old.
Onana does not have a future at Old Trafford and United are desperate to get rid of the him this summer but ESPN report that there are ‘concerns’ at the club that his salary increase could make it more difficult to find a new team for the goalkeeper.
Consequently, United are facing the prospect of paying a portion of Onana’s salary if they want to negotiate a new move, either permanently on loan.
Onana wants Man Utd return this summer
Onana’s salary is incentivised based on whether United are playing in Europe and the initial loan to Trabzonspor was only possible due to his lower salary this season.
The Cameroonian still has two years remaining on his contract with United and it is believed his preference is to re-join the squad for pre-season and fight for his place in the team.
United have no plans to replace current number one Senne Lammens after his impressive debut campaign and they will likely look to sign a new goalkeeper if backup Altay Bayindir leaves this summer.
Third choice keeper Tom Heaton is also set to retire at the end of the season but, even with their situation, United are not looking to reintegrate Onana into the squad.
Onana struggled for form and produced a number of high-profile errors since his €50m move from Inter in 2023 which led to previous manager Ruben Amorim replacing him last summer.
