Man Utd stunned as Liverpool hold transfer meeting to sign Bruno Fernandes favourite
Liverpool have reportedly held a transfer meeting with the representatives of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes as they look to finalise a deal this summer.
The 21-year-old has been a standout performer during his debut campaign in east London, following his arrival from Southampton for €44 million in August, and his form has attracted the attention of several Premier League giants.
Arsenal and Manchester City are both understood to be keeping tabs on the Portugal international, while it has been reported that Bruno Fernandes has told the Manchester United hierarchy to sign his compatriot amid their pursuit of a replacement for Casemiro.
However, Liverpool are also eager to sign Fernandes and they are currently leading the race for his signature, as per CaughtOffside.
It’s reported that Arne Slot’s side have already held talks with the Gestifute agency that represents Fernandes, and the Reds are expected to intensify negotiations over a potential deal when the 2026 summer transfer window opens in June.
The Portugal star, who made his senior international debut against USA on 1 April, has scored four goals and provided three assists in 31 games for West Ham and it’s reported that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will demand a fee in excess of €60m to sanction a sale this summer.
Liverpool to sign Mateus Fernandes?
Liverpool’s interest in Fernandes comes amid the uncertain futures of midfield duo Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones.
The former has been linked with a number of clubs in recent months following a notable dip in form, including Man Utd and Real Madrid, while the latter has just over one year remaining on his current contract at Anfield.
Both players could be set to leave Liverpool this summer and Fernandes has subsequently been earmarked as a possible target.
However, the Reds are also keen to bring a new central defender to the club ahead of the 2026-27 season, while a large proportion of their transfer funds may be required to sign an adequate replacement for the departing Mohamed Salah.
