Man Utd Transfer News Today: Bruno Fernandes identifies his replacement as path opens to Tonali deal
FootballTransfers runs through the latest Manchester United transfer news, rumours and gossip, including updates on Matheus Fernandes, Yan Diomande and Manuel Ugarte.
Fernandes identifies Man Utd successor
Bruno Fernandes has reportedly told Manchester United to pursue the signing of a Premier League star whom he has identified as his successor.
Fernandes has been United’s most important player since his arrival in 2020 but the 31-year-old has already cast his eyes to the future amid speculation surrounding his future at the club.
And, according to The Sun, the United skipper has recommended his Portuguese namesake Matheus Fernandes as the player he believes can follow in his footsteps at Old Trafford.
The West Ham youngster named Bruno as his idol after making his debut for Portugal last week and he has impressed this season after a €44 million transfer from Sporting last summer.
United ‘make opening bid’ for €100m Diomande
Diomande, 19, has been a revelation since arriving at Leipzig from Leganes last year and his immense form for the Bundesliga giants has attracted the attention of scouts from across European football in recent months.
Manchester United are also interested in signing Diomande and they have earmarked him as one of their top targets for this summer as they look to further bolster the attacking options available at Old Trafford.
According to transfer reporter IndyKaila, Man Utd have already submitted an opening bid for the winger, who is valued at over €100 million by Leipzig.
Carrick takes giant step to Man Utd job after De Zerbi snub
talkSPORT have revealed that De Zerbi took the Tottenham job after being informed that he would not be handed the reigns at Old Trafford.
De Zerbi is understood to have preferred a move to United and the 46-year-old is alleged to have reached out to the club to assess his chances before taking the job at Tottenham, but he was seemingly not given any assurances.
The decision suggested that Carrick is still in pole position to take the United job, with talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook saying: “We’ve got to Easter Weekend and they’ve not spoken – as I understand – to any other candidates.
“Speaking to people in Italy, they were telling me that De Zerbi – before taking the Tottenham job — sounded out Manchester United and was told he wasn’t in the reckoning there. Is that because they have already made their mind up without making it public?"
Man Utd find route to Tonali transfer
Manchester United could have found a new club for wantaway midfielder Manuel Ugarte in a move that could unlock a deal to sign Sandro Tonali.
Ugarte has hardly featured under Michael Carrick this year and the Uruguayan international looks set to be sold, particularly with United eyeing at least two midfield signings this summer.
According to CaughtOffside, while Juventus are said to be ‘leading the race’ for Ugarte, the likes of Newcastle, Aston Villa and Galatasaray are also monitoring the situation.
A move to Newcastle could give the Magpies a replacement for Tonali, who is also angling for a summer move and potentially broker a swap deal for Ugarte which would bring one of United’s top targets to Old Trafford and get rid of a fringe player in return.
Double wonderkid signing targeted
United are scouring the market for talents they could add to their youth ranks this summer. According to TEAMtalk, one player that has caught their eye is Tom Atcheson at Blackburn Rovers.
A talented centre-back, Atcheson has been compared to former Man Utd defender Phil Jones, who also came through the Rovers academy before making the move to Old Trafford. The teenager has signed a new long-term deal, but the Ewood Park side are braced for strong summer interest.
The same outlet also reports that Man Utd have earmarked Bayern Munich youngster Maycon Cardozo as a potential target. Born in Brazil, the 17-year-old grew up in Thailand, where his father played professionally, before transferring to Germany.
Cardozo, too, just signed a new contract, but Man Utd scouts are closely following his progress, it is claimed. For now, there is nothing to suggest that the young Brazilian will move anytime soon, but the Red Devils are massive admirers and could make an attempt to sign him in the future.
