Chelsea in talks with €100m superstar ahead of summer move
Chelsea have reportedly made enquiries with Morgan Rogers’ representatives about a potential summer move for the Aston Villa superstar.
The England international is one of the Blues’ top targets for the upcoming transfer window and it has been reported that a fee close to €100 million will be required to tempt Unai Emery’s side into a sale.
Rogers signed a new six-year contract at Villa Park in November, but he continues to be linked with an exit and it has been widely reported that he is open to leaving the club this summer, a stance that will intensify if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.
The 23-year-old has scored 10 goals and provided seven assists in 46 appearances across all competitions so far this season, and his situation is being monitored by every top club in the Premier League, in addition to Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.
Chelsea have been considered to be Rogers’ most likely destination for the past 12 months, although their pursuit of his signature will be complicated if they are unable to fix their current slump - with Champions League qualification in serious doubt following three consecutive Premier League defeats.
However, Liam Rosenior’s side are understood to be in talks with Rogers’ camp as they look to finalise a summer agreement, as per Sky Sports reporter Sacha Tavolieri.
Manchester United have also held discussions over a deal for the 23-year-old and it’s reported that Rogers is open to joining the Red Devils this summer, with Michael Carrick’s side expected to play in the Champions League after a recent resurgence of form.
Analysis: Chelsea unlikely to sign Morgan Rogers
Chelsea are keen to add players with proven Premier League experience to their youthful squad this summer and Rogers has been identified as a top target amid their pursuit of attacking reinforcements.
He is seen as a player capable of bolstering Rosenior’s options on the left wing and in the No.10 position, where he would compete for a starting berth with close friend and former Manchester City academy team-mate Cole Palmer.
However, Chelsea face an uphill battle to qualify for the Champions League and they feasibly could miss out on European football of any kind this term, which would almost certainly rule them out of contention to sign Rogers.
