Frank Lampard to raid Chelsea after Coventry promotion
Coventry City manager Frank Lampard is keen to raid his former club Chelsea for young star Jesse Derry this summer.
The Sky Blues are on the cusp of returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2001. Lampard has proved an exceptional appointment since taking over from club icon Mark Robins in 2024, winning a remarkable 41 of the 71 Championship matches he has overseen.
Thanks to their comfortable position in the table, Coventry are already thinking about their summer business ahead of their triumphant return to the top flight. Naturally, they want to go big to give themselves a good chance of staying up.
According to TEAMtalk, Lampard is planning to use his extensive knowledge of, and close ties with, Chelsea to Coventry's advantage this summer. One player, in particular, has caught the 47-year-old's eye.
It is claimed that Lampard is keen to bring wonderkid Jesse Derry to the CBS Arena this summer, following his hugely impressive first season in the Chelsea youth set-up.
Lampard wants Derry
The 18-year-old joined the Blues after rejecting a new contract at Crystal Palace last summer and proved an instant success. The tricky winger has scored six goals in 17 Premier League 2 appearances and made his senior debut for Chelsea in the FA Cup in February.
He was given a few minutes in a 4-0 win over Hull City and also featured against Wrexham in the following round. The teenager is regarded as one of the most promising prospects in the Chelsea academy, which hasn't gone unnoticed outside of Cobham.
Obviously, Chelsea would likely not agree to a sale of the prospect - even if he would generate a decent profit - so Lampard wants to take Derry on a season-long loan this summer.
Even this could prove problematic, however. It is claimed that Chelsea have "major long-term plans" for Derry and that they believe he could earn himself a regular spot in the first team squad over the next year or so.
Consequently, Chelsea are reluctant to engage in any kind of transfer talks for the youngster, even just over a temporary deal. Any decision on his future will only be made in the summer once the plans for the upcoming campaign are properly formulated.
