Michael Carrick has confirmed that Manchester United are likely to explore the winger market this summer.

The Red Devils culled their wide attacker department last summer under Ruben Amorim because the Portuguese preferred to play without traditional wingers. Alejandro Garnacho and Antony were sold, while Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho were loaned out. The latter two will not return.

As a result, interim boss Carrick only has Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and the injured Patrick Dorgu, previously a full-back, available as out-and-out wide players. It is only natural, then, that bolstering that position will be on the agenda after this season.

Indeed, Carrick has confirmed as much. "Yeah, quite possibly, in certain ways," the 44-year-old said when quizzed about a potential winger signing. "But I think we can still be dangerous, and I still think we can fill that spot.

"I think we’ve got players to be able to do it. It’s not a huge concern at the moment. We always want to improve, and we’re always thinking of that perfect scenario of mixing players together and connections and how it suits on the pitch.

"But Matheus [Cunha] has played that role and caused some problems and caused big problems and had big moments from playing wide or inside, so he’s doing well as well.

"I think you’re always looking at the balance of the team and the squad to give you the utmost flexibility, so it’s definitely something to look at for sure."

Man Utd in for Diomande and Adeyemi

It remains to be seen who Man Utd will ultimately home in on, but we already know some of the players who are on the Red Devils' shortlist. For one, INEOS are known to be huge fans of RB Leipzig wonderkid Yan Diomande.

The Ivorian was already linked with a move in January, but the Bundesliga club made it clear that he was not for sale mid-season. His participation in the African Cup of Nations also complicated matters.

He is likely to command a fee in the region of €100 million this summer and recently linked up with Jay-Z's Roc Nation agency in a clear sign that he is planning to move. However, he is being chased by most of Europe's top clubs, so signing him will not be straightforward.

Additionally, Man Utd are now once again being associated with a move for Borussia Dortmund winger Karim Adeyemi, who is said to be stalling on signing a new contract, according to BILD.

A fee of €85m was previously touted for the Germany international, although this increasingly looks like a fanciful price tag given his significant drop in form over the past few months.

Adeyemi has repeatedly made negative headlines for indiscipline - mainly for reacting poorly to being substituted - and has had to make do with a place on the bench in recent games. His start against Bayern at the weekend was his first after four games as a sub.

Arsenal have also been linked with the 24-year-old, and it was previously claimed that he would prefer joining the Gunners over Man Utd.
