Monumental Mason Greenwood transfer changes everything for Man Utd
Manchester United are watching developments at Olympique Marseille with interest as the future of Mason Greenwood becomes increasingly uncertain.
The disgraced former Man Utd forward has been playing in France since the summer of 2024. Greenwood had been arrested on charges of attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour in 2022.
Despite ostensible evidence circulating on social media, the charges against Greenwood were dropped when key witnesses withdrew from the case. Man Utd's attempt to reintegrate him into the first team met with widespread outcry, forcing them to abandon this plan.
Greenwood was instead loaned to Getafe in 2023 and then sold for around €26 million in 2024. Crucially, Man Utd inserted a hefty sell-on percentage in the deal with Marseille, so they will benefit handsomely from his next move.
According to L'Equipe, a departure from Marseille may not be long in coming. Though Greenwood's relationship with Roberto de Zerbi wasn't always the best, the Italian was a key factor in his move and helped him reignite his career.
Greenwood to leave Marseille?
With De Zerbi having now left Marseille, Greenwood could soon follow him out the door, the French outlet understands. The Ligue 1 giants are likely to experience significant squad turnover in the summer, with the Englishman a prime candidate to depart.
Greenwood, who finished as Ligue 1's joint-top scorer last term, is one of the most valuable players in the Marseille squad. Given that the club's finances have been problematic for years, they could be forced to sell him even if they manage to qualify for the Champions League.
Saudi clubs are paying close attention. They hold a long-standing interest in Greenwood, and the report states that a summer move to the Middle East is increasingly becoming a concrete possibility.
This is good news for Man Utd as they could earn as much as 50 per cent of any profit Marseille make on the 24-year-old. It was previously claimed that OM could demand as much as €100m, potentially handing the Red Devils a windfall of over €30 this summer.
With the Old Trafford outfit planning to make several marquee signings - notably in midfield and on the wing - this could be a game-changing financial boost.
