Man Utd has long been targeting Premier League-proven players to improve its midfield, and it has three lined up to replace the three possible departures.

Man Utd could have new midfield spine next season

Long-term targets Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson, and Morgan Gibbs-White are the players Man Utd are eyeing to replace Fernandes, Casemiro, and Ugarte.

The club chased Brighton’s Baleba last summer, while Nottingham Forest’s Anderson and Gibbs-White have also long been rumoured as possible additions.

Fernandes leads the Premier League with 16 assists — twice as much as the player in second, Rayan Cherki — which makes him the most vital player to replace.

Gibbs-White has just two assists in the league this season, but he posted at least eight assists in each of the last three seasons. He has also provided three assists in the Europa League, and he is Forest’s leading goalscorer in the league with eight goals.

Anderson provided six assists last season, and he can be both a duel-winner and a chance-creator in the centre of the park. He and Gibbs-White have combined to create 89 chances in the Premier League (45 and 44, respectively), and they rank first and second at the club.

Baleba, meanwhile, is a well-rounded midfielder somewhat similar to Anderson, which could make those two an ideal double-pivot behind Gibbs-White. Many of Baleba’s metrics are down this season compared to last, but he is still just 22, making him the youngest out of the trio of targets.
