Rio Ngumoha forces Liverpool to change transfer plan
Liverpool will not sign a new left winger this summer unless Cody Gakpo is sold on a permanent deal.
The Reds have been heavily linked with a number of forwards ahead of the 2026 summer transfer window, despite their spending spree last year, and bolstering their options on both flanks is understood to have been on their radar.
Arne Slot’s side have identified Michael Olise, Yankuba Minteh and Yan Diomande as possible long-term replacements for Mohamed Salah, amid continued rumours that he could leave Anfield this year, while they have also been tipped to sign a new left winger.
Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon has been earmarked as a top target by the Liverpool hierarchy, although a deal will not materialise unless Gakpo is sold.
That is according to TEAMtalk, who report that Liverpool don’t plan on having three first-team left wingers on their books next season, meaning a deal for Gordon is extremely unlikely to take place if Gakpo remains at Anfield.
The Netherlands international has, however, reportedly been offered to multiple clubs across Europe by intermediaries. Liverpool have no intention of pushing Gakpo towards the exit door, although a summer sale has not been ruled out.
Rio Ngumoha forces Liverpool to change transfer plan
Liverpool’s reluctance to sign another left winger if Gakpo remains at the club is reportedly due to the emergence of Rio Ngumoha in recent months.
The England U19 international moved to Anfield from Chelsea’s academy in 2024 and he has racked up 21 first-team appearances for the Reds this season, scoring once.
The 17-year-old is yet to establish himself as a regular starter for Liverpool, but he is expected to play an increasingly prominent role next season after a number of eye-catching performances this term. As a result, Liverpool don't want to block his development by adding another left winger to their squad.
