Five major transfers that could be completed on Deadline Day
The January transfer window is set to close at 19:00 GMT for English clubs and Premier League sides are still deep in negotiations to try and pull off some last-minute blockbuster deals.
The likes of Manchester City, Crystal Palace and Tottenham have been active and spending heavily so far this winter and there is a likelihood that more big deals could be completed before the window slams shut.
The biggest deal of the month so far has come through City’s signing of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth, while Pep Guardiola’s side also added England international Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.
With the windows also closing at 7pm in Italy, Germany and France, while Spain and Scotland’s close at 11pm, FootballTransfers takes a look at five major deals which could dominate the headlines on deadline day.
Lutsharel Geertruida: RB Leipzig to Liverpool
Liverpool are down to the bare bones in defence but they are operating under a tight budget after a huge outlay of nearly €500m in the summer, meaning resources are limited to strengthen their backline.
However, Arne Slot is turning to a familiar face in Lutsharel Geertruida, whom he managed at Feyenoord, with the Dutch defender able to cover at right-back, centre-back or in midfield.
The sticking point will be convincing Sunderland to end the 25-year-old’s current loan, with Leipzig then able to send Geertruida to Anfield, although it remains to be seen what finances and compensation is required to seal a deal.
Tyrique George: Chelsea to Everton
Chelsea have been relatively and uncharacteristically quiet in January so far, although they are making moves in defence with loans being sorted for Aaron Anselmino and Axel Disasi, while Mamadou Sarr is set to be recalled from his spell at Strasbourg.
But in attack, Chelsea are set to loan Tyrique George to Everton, with the Toffees having an option to buy the winger at the end of the season.
Although the fee has not been reported as of yet, George was close to leaving Chelsea during the summer and his exit is highly likely on Monday after a deal was struck with Everton.
Jean-Philippe Mateta: Crystal Palace to Milan
The last thing Crystal Palace need after losing captain Guehi this month is the loss of another star player but top scorer Jean-Philippe Mateta is set to join Milan for €30m.
The 28-year-old has 18 months left on his contract and is in search of a new challenge, with Palace willing to take a cut-price offer to ensure he leaves the Premier League, having seen Nottingham Forest offer close to €40m.
Mateta is due to have a medical in Milan in the coming hours before signing a contract ahead of the transfer deadline and the deal is close to completion.
Jorgen Strand Larsen: Wolves to Crystal Palace
Part of the reason Palace are now willing to sell Mateta is due to their offer for Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen being accepted on Sunday.
Palace had been in talks over a deal worth more than €55m but they have since negotiated down to €50m including add-ons for Strand Laresen.
The 25-year-old has agreed terms over a deal and is set to complete his switch to replace Mateta on Monday in perhaps the biggest deal financially of the day.
Ademola Lookman: Atalanta to Atletico Madrid
Arguably the biggest ongoing deal outside the Premier League is Atletico Madrid’s move for Ademola Lookman, who finally looks set to leave Atalanta after years of speculation.
Lookman has been a key figure for Atalanta since joining the club in 2022 but a series of fallouts and broken promises have left the relationship with player and team at a breaking point.
With Lookman having 18 months left on his contract, Atletico are set to pounce with a €35m deal to sign the forward and bring him to La Liga.
