Chelsea ignore Liam Rosenior message with latest transfer pursuit
Chelsea are reportedly set to battle Manchester United for the signing of Tromso centre-back Sedi Kinteh.
The 19-year-old Gambia international has emerged as a top target for a number of European clubs following an eye-catching debut campaign at Tromso and both Chelsea and Man Utd are considering launching a formal approach this summer.
That is according to a report from The Daily Mail, who also state that Swiss Super League sides Basel and Young Boys are interested in signing the teenager before their transfer window shuts on 16 February.
The left-footed defender is valued at roughly €4.6 million by Tromso and he has emerged as a transfer target for Chelsea following their failure to sign Stade Rennais star Jeremy Jacquet in January.
Kinteh is also capable of playing at left-back, similar to Chelsea summer signing Jorrel Hato, and, as per The Daily Mail, he has been clocked running at 37km/h this season, which is the same as the fastest player in the Premier League - Micky van de Ven.
Chelsea eye Sedi Kinteh
Chelsea’s interest in Kinteh comes despite Rosenior’s recent praise for centre-back duo Mamadou Sarr and Josh Acheampong.
Sarr was recalled from his loan spell at Strasbourg on Transfer Deadline Day, with Rosenior keen to be reunited with his former pupil, while academy graduate Acheampong has been a regular in the first-team for the past 12 months.
Following Sarr’s return to Stamford Bridge, Rosenior said: “Everyone knows what I think about Mamadou, I think he’s got the potential to be a world-class centre-back.
“I’m delighted he’s here and thank the sporting directors and ownership for supporting what I thought was the right decision for us and for him in his career.
“I see a growth in Mamadou, even his performance in the AFCON final. I see a growth in his physicality, I see a growth in his tactical understanding. Also, it was an area of the pitch I felt we could strengthen.
“He will get his opportunity, but he knows he needs to fight for it because we have got many outstanding centre-backs in our group.”
Meanwhile, when asked about Acheampong ahead of Chelsea’s clash against Leeds United on Tuesday night, Rosenior told reporters: “Josh is an amazing talent. In the time I've been here, I've got to meet him and his parents, and you can see why he's such a great lad because he’s been brought up the right way.
“Josh has immense potential, and what I like to do with all of my defenders - especially at their age - is put them in different positions because it improves them, improves their understanding of the game and improves their positioning.
“Long term, Josh is a centre-back, and he's got all the attributes to be an outstanding centre-back at a really, really high level. My job is to help him and to develop him, and I'm really looking forward to working with him for a long time.”
In addition to Sarr and Acheampong, Rosenior is also a huge admirer of both Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana, while Levi Colwill will soon return from an ACL injury. However, the Blues are still looking to sign another central defender, with Kinteh their latest target.
