Rangers have opened talks with Sunderland over Romaine Mundle and Dan Neil, according to a report.

The Ibrox giants are looking to make several statement signings this month as they pursue a record-setting 56th Premiership title. Rangers are in resurgent form under Danny Rohl and now just three points off league leaders Hearts despite a disastrous start to the season under Russell Martin.

Rohl has inherited a squad in large parts built for his predecessor, so he is keen to dip into the market and remould the team in his image. Talks have taken place with various players such as Silas Andersen and Tochi Chukwuani, with the latter reportedly set to join imminently.

Now, Sky Sports reports that Rangers have also enquired about the availability of Sunderland duo Romaine Mundle and Dan Neil. The chances of both players moving this month appear to be quite high.

Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris has admitted: “If a player won’t play too much in the second part of the season, there is the possibility for him to find another club to get minutes.”

Neil, a Sunderland local and boyhood fan, captained the team in the Championship playoff final in May, but minutes have been extremely limited for the midfielder in the Premier League.

The 24-year-old has only made three appearances this term, playing a grand total of 13 minutes in the English top flight, 11 of which came at the weekend against Brentford. His sole full match of the season came in the Carabao Cup loss to Huddersfield in August.

Wide player Mundle has similarly struggled to have an impact. He has played 171 minutes across eight Premier League appearances and not contributed to a goal thus far.

Unlike Neil, however, the 22-year-old former Tottenham prospect has at least been handed regular opportunities by Le Bris since recovering from a hamstring injury. Although his minutes have been limited, Mundle has appeared in all but one of Sunderland's last nine games.

This is why signing him could prove more difficult. The report states that Club Brugge and Espanyol also hold an interest in Mundle.
