Raheem Sterling could make a quick return to the Premier League after being released by Chelsea this week after another London side approved a move to sign the forgotten winger.

Sterling saw his contract terminated by Chelsea on Wednesday after more than two years out in the cold at Stamford Bridge and having failed to agree a move away.

Despite interest from a number of teams outside England, Sterling had been reluctant to leave London and his wages of more than €300,000-per-week saw tentative interest from the likes of Fulham and West Ham fail to materialise into serious offers.

But Sterling’s presence as a free agent, after agreeing a substantial pay-off with Chelsea, has led to some interest in his services and TEAMtalk report that Tottenham hold a ‘distinct advantage’ to sign the 31-year-old.

Spurs are said to be giving ‘serious consideration’ to signing Sterling and, crucially, manager Thomas Frank has reportedly given his thumbs up to bringing the forward to North London.

Sterling is seen as a ‘valuable’ short-term option to add experience and depth to Tottenham’s ranks amid an injury crisis and insiders have claimed that a move ‘cannot be ruled out’.

Sterling seeking fresh start in London after disastrous Chelsea stint

Sterling joined Chelsea in 2022 for €56 million and was an important player for his first two years in West London before the arrival of Enzo Maresca, at which point he was told he had no future at the club.

The England international ended up joining Arsenal on loan last season but he failed to capture his best form for the Gunners and played a bit part role in their campaign, only scoring once in all competitions.

Sterling was once again banished to Chelsea’s reserves upon his return to the club this summer but he refused to entertain offers from teams such as Napoli due to his desire to remain in London for family reasons.

With 18 months remaining on his contract, Chelsea terminated Sterling’s deal this week and, while the likes of Nottingham Forest and MLS sides have considered approaches, it appears that Tottenham may be the only side currently able to keep Sterling in London and resurrect his career.
