Chelsea on the verge of Jacquet breakthrough as compromise agreed
Chelsea's proposed signing of Jeremy Jacquet has taken a significant step forward thanks to the Blues' willingness to make a major concession to Rennes.
The France youth international has emerged as Chelsea's top target this month. Jacquet is regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in Europe, and the Stamford Bridge club want him to become Levi Colwill's long-term defensive partner.
However, discussions with Rennes have so far proved difficult. The Ligue 1 outfit are demanding a club-record-shattering fee of up to €70 million, which Chelsea are reluctant to pay.
Moreover, Liverpool and Bayern Munich have also entered the race for the 20-year-old, complicating the matter, even if the player's preferred destination is West London.
With time running out in the January window, Chelsea have a big decision to make. They will either have to cough up the money or accept that Jacquet will not be an immediate reinforcement.
Chelsea agree to Jacquet compromise
According to TEAMtalk, it seems that Chelsea are leaning towards the second option. The report claims that the Blues are willing to compromise in a bid to get a better deal.
It is suggested that Chelsea are open to letting Jacquet remain at Rennes for the remainder of the season, so any deal that would be agreed now would only be for the summer.
This also takes away any urgency to reach an agreement in the final hours of the window. Safe in the knowledge that Jacquet only wants them, Chelsea can let the deadline pass and continue to try to get Rennes to lower their asking price.
Although head coach Liam Rosenior would have preferred to have Jacquet available immediately, it is not like Chelsea are desperately short on defensive options.
With Aaron Anselmino having been recalled from his loan at Borussia Dortmund, Rosenior has six players capable of playing at centre-back currently at his disposal, and seven if we also count Axel Disasi, who is expected to leave before the window closes next week.
