OFFICIAL: Former Man Utd star joins Lionel Messi at Inter Miami
Inter Miami have announced the signing of former Manchester United left-back Sergio Reguilon.
The newly-crowned champions of Major League Soccer have moved swiftly to replace Barcelona legend Jordi Alba, who has opted to retire along with midfielder Sergio Busquets after an illustrious career.
The signing of Reguilon had been rumoured for several weeks, ever since Alba announced that he would hang up his boots this offseason. Now, Miami have officially confirmed his arrival.
Reguilon has been a free agent since the summer after getting released by Tottenham following their Europa League triumph. A former Real Madrid prospect, the Spaniard joined Spurs in 2020 for a sizeable €30 million after a breakout loan at Sevilla.
However, Reguilon never really found a home in North London. In 2022, he was loaned to Atletico Madrid. The following year, he moved to Man Utd for six months and then to Brentford for the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.
Reguilon replaces Alba at Inter Miami
In the 2024/25 season - his last at Tottenham - the six-time Spain international only made six appearances across all competitions, so his release in the summer was inevitable.
It was, however, quite surprising that he did not immediately find a new club. While it didn't work for him at Spurs, Reguilon did show that he can be a fairly reliable full-back during his various loan spells.
Miami will feel that they have pulled off something of a coup by securing the signing of the 28-year-old, although he will face a tall task trying to replace Alba, who was still spectacular in 2025 despite his advanced age.
The 36-year-old marauding left-back recorded a whopping eight goals and 16 assists across all competitions this year. Given this output, it is therefore quite interesting that the Herons have opted to go for Reguilon over Kai Wagner.
The latter, a standout performer at the Philadelphia Union, was also a name under consideration by Miami, and he would have been a more like-for-like replacement for Alba than the less attack-minded Reguilon.
It seems, though, that financial and cultural considerations - Miami have a massive contingent of Spanish speakers - ultimately tipped the balance in favour of the former Real Madrid prospect.
