Mohamed Salah could end up remaining at Liverpool despite the uncertainty around his career after Arne Slot insisted he was not looking to lose his star man in January.

Salah provided a record-breaking assist after coming on as a 26th minute substitute during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Brighton on Saturday in the Egyptian’s last match before heading to the Africa Cup of Nations.

It had been expected that Salah would be sold in January after his bombshell interview last week but the 33-year-old held clear-the-air talks with Slot and the Dutch coach was vocal over his desire to keep hold of the forward.

"For me, there is no issue to resolve," Slot said after the match. "He is now the same as any player. You talk to your players if you are happy or unhappy with things but there is nothing for me to talk about after what happened against Leeds after the game."

When asked if Salah had indicated that he wanted to stay at Anfield, Slot said: "I think you already know the answer to that. What has been said between the two of us in that conversation stays between us. What you see is what you get to know, that he was in the squad and my first substitution.”

“He's a Liverpool player and the moment he's [here] I like to use him when we need him," Slot added.

Konate stands by Salah after Liverpool controversy

Salah is still wanted by Saudi Pro League sides and a move could still materialise in January if a formal offer comes in to Liverpool after AFCON ends in mid-January.

However, Ibrahima Konate told French media that he believes Salah will remain at Liverpool and admitted he could understand his teammate’s frustration.

“Personally, no, I don’t think so,” Konate said when asked whether Salah had played his last game for Liverpool. “Today you saw how much he loves this club.

“What happened with him – you have to understand the frustration sometimes felt by players who have such a career, who have done so much.

“He is a player that everyone loves, the coach loves, he loves the coach, everyone loves each other at this club.”
