Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is on his way to Chelsea, according to a transfer insider.

The Red Devils academy product is struggling for game time at Old Trafford after being designated Bruno Fernandes' deputy by Ruben Amorim. Given that the captain is the first name on the team sheet, Mainoo is rarely more than a substitute.

This would be frustrating in any season, but it is even worse when there is a World Cup on the horizon. Mainoo was part of the England squad at Euro 2024, and he wants to be on the plane to the United States in 2026.

In the summer, Amorim bluntly denied Mainoo's request for a loan move. Recent reports suggest that he is prepared to do the same in January as he does not want to be left shorthanded in the new year.

However, speculation surrounding Mainoo continues to swirl. Napoli are pushing hard for his signature, while Chelsea, who were interested last January, were recently tipped to complete a move for him by Man Utd legends Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.

Mainoo to Chelsea is the direction of travel

According to former Everton boss Keith Wyness, who now runs a consultancy firm that advises clubs, a move to Chelsea is indeed the direction of travel for Mainoo. “I think it’s very unfair and I think that Mainoo, look, he’s a squandered talent in that sense," he told Football Insider.

"For some reason, he hasn’t caught Amorim’s eye. He thinks he doesn’t fit the style. I think that they decided that Adam Wharton is going to be one of their targets, and I think that Mainoo may find himself reinventing himself at Chelsea.

“That’s where I see the situation going, and that’s the whispers I’ve been hearing. I think it would be good for Mainoo. I think he needs to get out of there and move forward.”

Chelsea will surely be attentive to Mainoo's situation, given their well-documented admiration for him and their transfer model, but whether they will really reignite their interest remains to be seen.

The Blues are currently well-stocked in midfield, which also raises doubts about Mainoo's willingness to trade Old Trafford for Stamford Bridge since he wants guaranteed game time.
