Manchester United will not allow Kobbie Mainoo to go out on loan following Bruno Fernandes suffering a hugely concerning injury against Aston Villa, according to a report.

The Red Devils suffered two major setbacks on Sunday in losing 2-1 to Aston Villa and seeing captain Fernandes come down with a worrying injury. Ruben Amorim confirmed after the game that the 31-year-old would be sidelined for "a while."

Fernandes has been a life insurance for the Red Devils in recent years, so his absence will be a major concern amid the ongoing inconsistency of Amorim's side. However, the head coach has insisted that Man Utd won't make any panic buys in January.

As far as Amorim is concerned, Man Utd have a ready-made, in-house replacement in Mainoo. He has repeatedly made clear that the 20-year-old is Fernandes' backup, which is the reason for the youngster's frustration.

The captain's injury will now allow Mainoo to try to convince Amorim of his quality, provided he gets fit, of course. Mainoo himself missed Sunday's game against Villa due to a knock.

Mainoo going nowhere in January

While the full extent of Fernandes' injury has yet to become clear, Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth believes that it is out of the question that Man Utd will now allow Mainoo to leave the club on loan.

Napoli have been pushing hard for weeks to bring the midfielder in, but the injury to Fernandes, as well as players being away at the Africa Cup of Nations, means that a transfer appears highly unlikely.

"Ruben Amorim has said that he wants Kobbie Mainoo to stay," Sheth explained. "He has maintained that he has to perform and convince him that he should be in the team ahead of Bruno Fernandes.

"Whenever he is asked why Mainoo can't get in the team, it's because Ruben Amorim says he is competing with Bruno Fernandes in the team. With Fernandes maybe out for some of January, you can't imagine a scenario now where Manchester United to allow Mainoo to go.

"Would it benefit Man United to let Kobbie Mainno go out on loan? Probably not because he's part of their squad and he has been coming off the bench.

"Particularly with the AFCON on and Bruno Fernandes injured. It was bad timing for Mainoo yesterday when he picked up the calf injury and missed the game against Aston Villa.

"Ruben Amorim has already suggested he may miss the game on Boxing Day against Newcastle United, but thereafter, if he gets himself fit, there may be an opportunity for Mainoo to establish himself once again in the Manchester United starting XI."
