Contrary to Bruno Fernandes' comments, Manchester United are not planning to sell the captain, according to various reports.

Portuguese outlet Canal 11 dropped a bombshell interview with the Red Devils superstar earlier on Tuesday. In the interview, Fernandes claims that Man Utd directors had pushed for him to leave the club in the summer after receiving strong Saudi interest.

Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr and Al-Ittihad all came calling for Fernandes at various times in the previous window, but Fernandes rejected the approaches for family reasons and because of his affection for Man Utd.

“I decided to stay, also because of family reasons, but because I genuinely love the club," he said in the interview, which was recorded during the international break in November. "The conversation with the manager also made me stay.

"But, from the club’s side, I felt a bit like, ‘if you leave, it’s not so bad for us.’ It hurts me a bit. More than hurting, it makes me sad because I’m a player who can't really be criticised. I’m always available, I always play, good or bad. I give my all. Then, you see things around you, players who don’t value the club as much and don’t defend the club as much. That makes you sad.”

Man Utd don't want to sell Fernandes

Despite Fernandes' comments, various reporters, including Ben Jacobs and Simon Stone, claim that Man Utd insiders are unanimous that the Old Trafford club did not want to sell him in the summer.

This stance, it is further asserted, has not changed heading into 2026. Man Utd do not want to lose their captain, even if he is now on the wrong side of 30.

Recent reports had claimed that Man Utd would be willing to sacrifice Fernandes for their midfield rebuild next year, but this is being emphatically denied by those in and around the club.

Ultimately, though, only time will tell if this is really the truth or if it is just damage limitation from the club. Fernandes' comments are akin to Mohamed Salah's recent outburst, who similarly claimed that someone at Liverpool wants to get rid of him.

It remains to be seen if Man Utd will mete out a punishment to Fernandes, but reports insist that he remains central to the Red Devils' long-term plans despite his comments.
