Chelsea get green light to COMPLETE striker signing
Chelsea have received a big boost in their pursuit of Robinio Vaz as Marseille are open to offers, according to French media.
The 18-year-old has been primarily a substitute under Roberto de Zerbi this season, but he did make an impact when given opportunities earlier in the season. Vaz has notched four goals and a pair of assists in 14 Ligue 1 outings so far.
However, his recent form has left a lot to be desired, resulting in De Zerbi leaving him on the bench for the entire 90 minutes against Monaco earlier this month.
He was only given 27 minutes in the Coupe de France against third-tier Bourg-en-Bresse before the winter break, having not netted a goal since October.
Despite his evident potential, Foot Mercato reports that Vaz is not considered untouchable by Marseille. In fact, the French giants are ready to listen to offers in January.
Marseille could cash in on stars in January
Marseille would be willing to sell the teenager should a satisfactory offer arrive. In November, it was claimed that Chelsea had held exploratory talks with the striker, so they are likely to be in the mix for him next month.
Vaz is not the only surprising name that could depart OM in the winter. Highly-rated Darryl Bakola, also 18, will be put on the market if he does not respond favourably to the club's recent contract offer, while summer signing Angel Gomes could be set for a quick exit.
Marseille's willingness to make potentially painful sales is likely informed by the club's financial situation. Since Frank McCourt's takeover in 2016, OM have haemorrhaged money every season, forcing the owner to step into the breach and cover the deficit annually.
The economic circumstances in Ligue 1, especially the lack of competitive broadcast revenues, mean that Champions League qualification and player sales are a must for Marseille to avoid falling foul of financial regulations.
