Enzo Maresca hits back at Chelsea sack rumours after 'worst 48 hours' comment

Enzo Maresca has admitted that he is “absolutely” committed to his role as Chelsea head coach following rumours that he could be sacked by the Stamford Bridge hierarchy.

The Italian appeared to take aim at the Chelsea owners after their 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday by revealing “the last 48 hours have been the worst 48 hours since I joined the club because many people didn't support us.”

Maresca later clarified that he loves the Blues fanbase, suggesting that his comments were directed at the Chelsea board instead.

Rumours have speculated there is an “internal issue” at the club and it has been claimed that Chelsea have already sounded out Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner as a possible replacement for Maresca if he is sacked by the Blues.

However, the 45-year-old has insisted that he remains happy at Chelsea and he has admitted his desire to look ahead to the future, rather than dwell on his comments from Saturday.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup quarter-final clash against Cardiff City on Tuesday evening, Maresca was asked to clarify the meaning behind his bombshell comments over the weekend.

“I already spoke about that and I don't have anything to add,” he told reporters. “It's Cardiff tomorrow, please. I already spoke about that and I think I was quite clear. No more than that.

“I respect your opinion and people's opinion. I have nothing to add. My focus is on tomorrow's game and that we can achieve the third semi-final in my time at the club.

“We are in an era where everyone can say what they think. I respect people's opinions, your opinion, but I have nothing to add. My focus is on tomorrow. I already answered the question and my focus is on tomorrow. I don't have anything to add.

“I said after the game that I love Chelsea supporters - they deserve the best. Again, I don't have anything to add.”

Maresca continued: “I can speak Italian, my language, Spanish very well, French, English, I think I was clear with what I said. It's done, it's finished. It was after the game, I said what I said, and it's done. It's finished. Now, Cardiff. We need to move forward because tomorrow we have Cardiff.

When asked if he is committed to being the Chelsea head coach, Maresca then unequivocally replied: “Absolutely, yes.”

The Italian still has over three years remaining on his current contract at Stamford Bridge and although his side have endured several tough spells of form during his reign, he has credit in the bank following their triumphs in the Club World Cup and Europa Conference League finals earlier this year.
