'We will call them': Chelsea set for defender transfer after standout performances
Chelsea will enter negotiations in the coming days over a transfer for a young defender who has started to make a name for himself in the Bundesliga.
The Blues purchased Aaron Anselmino last summer for €16.5 million and have loaned him to Dortmund this season after he spent the previous campaign on loan at Boca, where he was signed from.
Anselmino suffered a muscle injury after his debut which kept him out of action for nearly two months until he made his return to the Dortmund first team in October.
The 20-year-old has since became a mainstay in Dortmund’s defence after starting three of the last six matches, having also scored the opener in his side’s 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen this weekend.
Dortmund do not have an option to permanently purchase Anselmino but their sporting director Sebastian Kehl admitted he would quickly look to speak to Chelsea about extending the youngster’s stay beyond the current season.
"Of course, we hope that Aarón stays longer," Kehl said. "I’ll certainly have to pick up the phone in the next few days and call [Chelsea]. We have a pretty good relationship,” he added.
Chelsea could consider Anselmino recall after impressive Dortmund loan
Anselmino had only played seven matches for Boca before Chelsea purchased him in August 2024 and he spent the next four months on loan with the Argentine side before being recalled in January.
After seeing out the remainder of the campaign in Chelsea’s reserves, Anselmino made his debut for the club in the summer’s Club World Cup when he came on against Benfica for the final few seconds of the match.
Anselmino then joined Dortmund on loan and has since made his debut for the Argentina under-20s national team as his career continues to progress.
There is even the possibility of Chelsea recalling him from his loan if they get more injuries in defence, with Enzo Maresca keen to sign a centre-back in January in order to cover their squad depth.
