Manchester United are 'stepping up' their efforts to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson in a blockbuster January deal, according to a report.

The Red Devils' priority for 2026 is to reinforce their engine room. Casemiro is not getting any younger and is expected to leave the club, unless he agrees to take a pay reduction and signs a new contract.

Manuel Ugarte, too, is facing an uncertain future. The Uruguay international has been an underwhelming signing and has been fielding interest from Serie A since the summer. Then, there is the tricky situation of Kobbie Mainoo, who is begging the club to be allowed to go out on loan.

Man Utd have several midfield targets, and one of them will have an audition later on Saturday when the Old Trafford club take on Nottingham Forest. England star Elliot Anderson is understood to be high on Ruben Amorim's shortlist.

In fact, CaughtOffside claims that recruitment chiefs at Man Utd are 'unanimous' in their desire to sign the 22-year-old. Efforts to potentially bring him in in January are being accelerated.

Anderson to Man Utd in January?

The report acknowledges that it is unclear if a January move is really possible, as Anderson might be reluctant to switch clubs in a World Cup year, when he has just broken into Thomas Tuchel's side.

Chelsea, Man City and Newcastle are also credited with an interest in the midfielder, further complicating the matter. Interestingly, though, it is claimed that Man Utd could face paying up to €80 million for Anderson, which is significantly lower than other reports have suggested.

Transfer insider Florian Plettenberg recently asserted that Forest would not do business for less than €100m, with the reporter claiming that Anderson could command a fee as high as €137m.

Journalist Ben Jacobs appeared to echo this on Friday when he revealed that Man Utd would have to seriously overpay if they want to bring in one of their top midfield targets in January.

He posited that Atletico Madrid star Conor Gallagher would be the easiest to get because he wants to return to the Premier League in January. Deals for Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Anderson, on the other hand, look incredibly difficult to do mid-season.
