Crystal Palace have initiated contract extension talks with Manchester United target Adam Wharton, according to football transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano.
The 21-year-old has emerged as a key target for the Red Devils in recent months and Ruben Amorim’s side are expected to intensify their pursuit of his signature in January as they look to sign at least one new central midfielder in 2026.

Man Utd are also interested in signing Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba, however Wharton remains on their radar amid his impressive form at Selhurst Park.
The England star has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders since his arrival from Blackburn Rovers in January 2024 and he has been included in Thomas Tuchel’s senior squad for the upcoming November international fixtures versus Serbia and Albania.
Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid are also said to be tracking Wharton’s development, however Crystal Palace have now opened contract talks with the midfielder, as per Romano.
Wharton still has three-and-a-half years remaining on his current deal at Selhurst Park, but Palace have initiated negotiations with his representatives and they are eager to tie him down to fresh terms in an attempt to ward off interest from across the Premier League.
Adam Wharton responds to Man Utd interest
Despite rumoured interest from Man Utd and other top Premier League clubs, Wharton has insisted that he isn’t bothered by increasing transfer speculation.
“I don't really look into it or think too much about it,” the Crystal Palace midfielder admitted to The Athletic.
“There are always rumours floating about on social media. Is it true? Is it not? You tell me.
“My friends, my family, my brothers, everyone will message me and be like, ‘Is it true this club’s interested?’ I'm like, ‘Thanks for telling me because I didn't know.’
“I don't know who's spreading it or who at United is looking at it. I see it and I'm like, ‘OK’, and then I carry on with my day.
“United, the big teams, they're all linked to 10, 20 different players. If I'm one of 20, then it's nothing special, so it doesn't really mean too much. I speak with my agent about planning ahead and possibilities.
“But at the end of the day, it is who's interested and who's willing to try and get you and if that becomes the case?
“You can speak about it, but you've got to represent that on the pitch and prove that you deserve it.”
Wharton has made 58 first-team appearances for Crystal Palace since his arrival at the club and it has been rumoured that he could cost as much as €100 million next summer.
