Not Konate: Liverpool STUNNED as star 'agrees' to join Real Madrid
Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano has 'agreed' to join Real Madrid over Liverpool, according to a report.
The France international is out of contract next summer, and discussions over a new deal at Bayern have been tough to get rolling. Although the Munich outfit are desperate to keep the defender, Upamecano has opted to keep his options open in recent months.
The main stumbling block, according to Sky Germany, has been the 27-year-old's desire to attain a release clause. However, this is a privilege Bayern have only granted to a select few players so far, namely Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala.
Chairman of the Board Herbert Hainer publicly called on Upamecano to follow the likes of Musiala, Alphonso Davies and Joshua Kimmich in extending his contract at Bayern's annual general assembly recently, but with little success.
According to Foot Mercato, the centre-back is ready to snub Bayern and join Real Madrid on a free transfer next summer. It is claimed that Upamecano already has a 'verbal agreement' to move to the Spanish capital in 2026.
Real Madrid prioritise Upamecano signing
If true, this will be a major boost for Real Madrid, who have made signing a new centre-back a priority for 2026. David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger are both facing uncertain futures at the Estadio Bernabeu.
Real Madrid's initial top target for next year was Arsenal superstar William Saliba, but the Frenchman has opted to extend his stay at the Emirates. They then appeared to shift their focus to Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate.
Like Upamecano, Konate is out of contract and is stalling on agreeing fresh terms. Ironically, Liverpool have reportedly shortlisted Upamecano to replace his compatriot at Anfield.
Despite Konate's impressive performance against Real Madrid on Tuesday, it is claimed that Upamecano is now being prioritised, although the report refuses to rule out a move for the Reds star as well.
The likes of PSG and Chelsea have also been linked with Upamecano, while Konate has admitted that he would love the play for the former, having grown up in Paris.
If Upamecano ends up leaving Bayern, the Bundesliga side will go all-in on Liverpool target Marc Guehi, with first talks having already taken place. There will be major centre-back movement next summer, and Liverpool look like the big losers as things stand.
