Arne Slot rocked as Liverpool coach close to exit
Liverpool boss Arne Slot could be dealt another big blow as close ally Giovanni van Bronckhorst could abandon ship to become the new manager of the Indonesian national team.
According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Van Bronckhorst is in the running to become the new head coach of the Asian country's senior men's team.
The former Feyenoord manager, currently an assistant manager at Liverpool, has Indonesian roots through his parents and would therefore be an attractive candidate for the position.
The Indonesian Football Association has been searching for a new coach since the dismissal of Patrick Kluivert on 16 October.
Kluivert failed to qualify the team for the 2026 World Cup, and the association is now seeking a new leader to lead the team to the Asian Cup in 2027.
Van Bronckhorst as assistant at Liverpool
Van Bronckhorst is viewed as a potential successor to Kluivert, given his experience as head coach at Feyenoord, Guangzhou City, Rangers FC and Besiktas.
Van Bronckhorst has been assistant manager at Liverpool since the summer, replacing John Heitinga. Heitinga became head coach at Ajax but has since been fired.
Liverpool appear to be a bit of a sinking ship at present, so Van Bronckhorst may be tempted to seek a new challenge in international football.
Whether Van Bronckhorst is actually interested in the role of national coach is not yet known, but his connection to the country and his experience in coaching make him an intriguing option.
Indonesia aims to qualify for the Asian Cup in 2027 after missing out on the 2026 World Cup. The Indonesian FA would likely have to buy the Dutchman out of his Liverpool contract.
Despite a huge population, Indonesia, like other major Asian nations such as China and India, has struggled to make its mark on the game.
The only tangible success the senior men's national team has tasted to date came in the Southeast Asian Games in the late 1987 and 1991.
