Football transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has dropped a major update on several key developments ahead of the January window, including the latest on Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.

Liverpool update

Arne Slot has been heavily linked with a Liverpool exit in recent weeks, amid the Reds’ dismal form since the end of September, but Romano has clarified that he won’t be sacked as things stand.

“The message coming from the club is still a message of support for the manager Arne Slot,” the transfer reporter admitted in his latest YouTube video.

“Of course they want to see, as soon as possible, different results. So this situation must change as soon as possible. Already against West Ham and in the next games, Liverpool want to see a reaction. They can't accept these kinds of results. So the situation is still with the manager being supported, but obviously the message coming from the club is clear: always with the coach, but asking for a change as soon as possible.

Romano added: “One of the players to discuss in today’s video coming from Liverpool is Ibrahima Konate. Real Madrid, who are in a good relationship with Liverpool, informed the English club: ‘We want to inform you that despite taking this opportunity into consideration, we are not going for Konate.’ This was the message coming from Real Madrid.

“This doesn’t mean that Real Madrid are not going to sign a defender in 2026. Real Madrid haven’t changed their strategy on a centre-back - that’s an important point. I still expect Real Madrid to sign a centre-back in 2026.

“It’s not about that. It’s about Konate. Liverpool know that Real Madrid considered Konate, but now Real Madrid have informed Liverpool of their desire to leave the conversation and focus on different targets.

“What happens now with Konaté? He has a new contract proposal on the table from Liverpool, but there is still no financial agreement on the terms of this new contract. They are discussing.

“He’s not the only one at Liverpool. They’re also talking to Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch.”

Sergio Ramos to leave Monterrey

Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos has been plying his trade in Mexico since x, but the Spaniard could be set to return to Europe next year.

“I wanted to mention something else we have from these days, and it’s about Sergio Ramos. He spent the last months of his career at Monterrey in Mexico, but has informed them, via his agent, that he’s not going to stay at the club in 2026. It means that Ramos will be available on a free transfer in January,” Romano revealed.

“My understanding is that Ramos doesn’t want to retire. He wants to play very competitive football and he wants to try something different. Ramos would be open to returning to Europe and he would even be open to a six-month opportunity in Europe. So keep an eye on this one because Ramos will be offered to clubs.”

New Arsenal target

Arsenal spent big on new signings over the summer, however Romano has confirmed that Mikel Arteta’s side have added a new midfielder to their transfer wishlist.

“Rodrigo Mendoza from Elche, 20 years old, has a release clause of €20m and this release clause is attracting several clubs,” the transfer expert said. “Arsenal had their scouts at two games between October and November to follow Mendoza and they are keeping a close eye on the player. It’s not only Arsenal though, because Italian and Spanish clubs are also monitoring this boy.

“Arsenal are very good with these opportunities. Cristhian Mosquera was not about a release clause, but it was an opportunity, for example, as he was soon out of contract at Valencia. Arsenal and Arteta decided to go for it and sign a top defender for a very cheap price. So Mendoza could be an opportunity.

“At the moment, Arsenal are happy with the midfielders they have, so it’s not something imminent, but they’re monitoring the player. There are more clubs, again, interested in this boy. So let’s see what’s going to happen, but for sure an interesting player to follow, with a lot of clubs tracking him."

Ederson latest

Finally, long-term Manchester United target Ederson could reportedly be set to leave Atalanta for a substantially reduced transfer fee next year.

Romano admitted: “Andre Cury, who is the agent of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, sent a message in recent days. And the message coming from the agent is that the contract of Ederson is valid until 2027. There is no discussion ongoing to extend that contract and so, with one-and-a-half years left on his contract, the agent says the price for Ederson is now between €30-€40m.

“So it could be a big opportunity, because he was saying in this interview that Atalanta were considering this opportunity in 2025 for €60 or €70m. Now it’s different. Now he could be available for something around €30-€40m.

“Ederson has put himself on the market and that’s a big change compared to one year ago, when Man Utd wanted him and several clubs were tracking him. Ederson will be one to watch in 2026 and could already be one to watch in the January transfer window.”
