AC Milan are still trying to extend the contract of Mike Maignan despite his desire to leave after summer talks with Chelsea, according to Italian media.

The France international is in the final few months of his contract, and he is performing better than ever. Maignan was the hero in the Derby della Madonnina at the weekend, saving a penalty to secure a crucial win over Inter and keep Milan within touching distance of Serie A leaders AS Roma.

This is a far cry from last season, when the goalkeeper was struggling to perform at his usual level. Given the summer he had - a move to Chelsea in June fell through despite agreeing terms with the Blues - many expected him to have another poor season.

However, it has been the complete opposite. New head coach Massimiliano Allegri lobbied for Maignan to stay at Milan despite his contract situation, and the 30-year-old is repaying the manager's faith.

The question of his contract continues to loom large, though. Maignan previously made it clear that he would not extend his expiring terms, putting Europe's biggest clubs on red alert.

Will Maignan stay or go?

Gazzetta dello Sport has now provided an update on his situation after his heroics at the weekend. According to the Italian outlet, Milan's contract proposal remains on the table, but so far, talks are still gridlocked.

Milan are offering a handsome €5 million annual salary, up from his current €3.2m yearly wage, which the report terms 'unusual generosity' from the Rossoneri for a player who is on the wrong side of 30.

The Serie A giants will continue to attempt to restart discussions, but the allure of the Premier League remains. Links with Chelsea have continued despite the Blues having resisted the temptation to return for him later in the summer window.

It had been thought that Chelsea would not look to change their goalkeeper department in 2026, but the recent revelation that No.2 Filip Jorgensen is looking to leave in January may change the situation.

Chelsea are reluctant to allow the Denmark international to depart mid-season and are asking him to hold out until the summer, when the highly-rated Mike Penders will return from his loan at sister club Strasbourg to challenge for the No.1 spot.

Signing Maignan could block the Belgian's development, but Chelsea would get a world-class goalkeeper at the peak of his powers. The situation will be one to watch.
