Chelsea legend sounds alarm bells over transfer policy
Chelsea and Strasbourg legend Frank Leboeuf has raised concerns about the latter's long-term future under BlueCo ownership.
The 1998 World Cup winner will have been intrigued when BlueCo acquired Ligue 1 outfit Strasbourg in the summer of 2023, as it established a connection between the two clubs he made the most appearances for during his playing career.
After playing north of 150 games for the Alsatians, Leboeuf joined Chelsea in 1996 and went on to win numerous trophies with the Stamford Bridge club across five years in West London.
However, instead of excitement, the takeover evoked more of a sense of trepidation, echoing the feelings espoused by the most vocal sections of Strasbourg's fanbase, who feared for their club's independence.
Speaking to GFFN, Leboeuf has now shared his thoughts on the current state of Strasbourg, who have had success on the pitch thanks to the investment from Chelsea's owners.
Leboeuf concerned about Strasbourg's long-term future
While Leboeuf admitted that the takeover has so far been largely positive and that fans, for the most part, are content with BlueCo ownership, he did raise concerns about the long-term future of Strasbourg.
“Well, I’m happy," he began. "I’m happy with the way it works. I’m happy how Strasbourg can get results, and for the second season, everything seems to be spot on.
“Now, I wonder about the long term, what’s going to happen to the club because every time you have good players doing great for Strasbourg, they’re going to go back to Chelsea or they’re going to be sold to somebody else because we all know the business system that the Chelsea board is undertaking.
“It’s good, fans are happy right now, the players are giving 100 per cent, but what’s going to happen within one, two, three years, I don’t know. So I’m always keeping myself aware of what’s going on."
Leboeuf further acknowledged that the BlueCo takeover has been successful in helping his former teammate, president Marc Keller, overcome the financial difficulties Strasbourg faced previously.
“I don’t feel the stability right now that I would love to see at Strasbourg," he explained. "But that’s also the only way that Marc has found to make sure that Strasbourg can respond to any financial issues. So it’s fair.”
