Man Utd drop Guehi January transfer bomb as Glasner admits England star will leave
Manchester United are ready to enter the race to sign Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi in a turn of events that will frustrate Premier League rivals Liverpool.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, Man Utd will seek to sign Guehi as a free agent when his contract expires at Selhurst Park next summer.
Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Liverpool are the three other teams credited with a major interest in the 25-year-old, although Barcelona and Manchester City are also thought to be following him.
Palace came close to selling Guehi to Liverpool last summer, and their decision to pull out of a deal with the Anfield could have a defining impact on the season as Arne Slot’s side struggle for defensive cover.
Man Utd are now eyeing Guehi as they are increasingly resigned to losing Harry Maguire on the free transfer when his deal expires. Only “limited progress” has been made over contract talks with the England centre-back.
In a surprise twist, United are not ruling out bringing forward a bid for Guehi to January in a deal that would rock the Premier League.
Crystal Palace admit Marc Guehi will depart
While Guehi remains committed to Crystal Palace for the moment, the club could choose to use this last opportunity to cash in on him.
The Ivory Coast-born star has already announced that he will not sign a new deal.
Palace boss Oliver Glasner said in October: “I think Marc has already told us that he doesn't sign a new contract, so he will leave next year.
“The club wanted him to stay. They offered Marc a new contract. But he said: 'No, I want to do something different.' And that's normal.
“And for us, it's how we can deal with this situation? What is the best way to get this next step done? And that's all about how we are talking together.”
With Man Utd studying a January move for Guehi, the possibility of Liverpool re-entering the race midseason should not be discounted, with the window already heating up.
