Liverpool's next superstar striker confirms transfer stance
Liverpool youngster Will Wright has confirmed that he is aiming to break into Andoni Iraola’s first-team squad following an excellent start to the new season.
The 18-year-old, who joined Liverpool’s academy after a sublime spell at Salford City, has scored nine goals in just eight youth-team games so far this season, including a hat-trick versus LASK in the UEFA Youth League on Wednesday.
Wright is yet to feature in a Premier League matchday squad under new boss Iraola, however he is targeting a first-team debut this season.
Speaking to the Liverpool media team after his three-goal haul against LASK, Wright admitted: “I’ve picked up some good form at the start of the season and I have to just carry it on.
“It’s my first hat-trick for the club. I’m obviously a goalscorer but I want to be a more complete player as well.”
He continued: “Of course, I have to just keep working hard like Lewis [Koumas] has, and some of the other lads like Chambo [Luke Chambers] and James McConnell.
“They come back and you ask, ‘What’s it like?’ and they say everyone works hard. That’s the level we have to aim for.
“My motivation is purely to get into the first team, to get in and around training and learn off some of the likes of [Alexander] Isak and Hugo [Ekitike].
“I like a direct striker who likes running in behind, always putting himself about, and I think that summarises me as well. It’s the way I was brought up, playing grassroots football on pitches that have rabbit holes in them. You are taught to deal with that circumstance.
“I appreciate the pitches and the facilities I work in because sometimes there can be a click of the fingers and it’s away from you.”
Will Wright to become Liverpool’s next superstar striker?
Liverpool spent a combined €240 million on Isak and Ekitike, so Wright is unlikely to usurp either player for a starting berth at Anfield anytime soon.
However, he is still only 18 years old and with time on his side, he is expected to continue his development before potentially breaking into the Liverpool senior team.
Wright has scored 15 goals and provided seven assists in just 26 appearances for Liverpool’s academy, and Iraola could soon be tempted to give him an opportunity in the first-team if his current form continues.
