Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is 'facing scrutiny' as Ruben Amorim is looking to rebuild his midfield, according to a report.

The Red Devils' main priority for 2026 is adding at least one high-profile midfielder to their squad. Ideally, Amorim would like to bring in two and potentially even three, depending on outgoings and opportunities in the market.

In the summer, Man Utd explored late moves for Carlos Baleba and Conor Gallagher, but neither materialised. Heading into the new year, more players have been added to the club's shortlist, including the likes of Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson.

None of these names will come cheap, however. Even Gallagher, the most affordable and attainable option, is expected to command a figure in excess of the €42 million Atletico Madrid paid for him last year.

This means that in order to bring in players, others will have to be offloaded. Incredibly, it seems that none of Man Utd's current midfielders are untouchable, not even captain Fernandes.

Man Utd could cash in on Fernandes

It is no secret that the likes of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte are facing uncertain futures at Old Trafford. The former is on a massive wage and will only have his contract extended if he takes a substantial pay cut, while the latter has underperformed since joining in 2024.

Kobbie Mainoo, too, remains the subject of speculation. The homegrown is pushing for a January loan in a bid to salvage his World Cup chances, but Man Utd are reluctant to sanction a temporary exit. He appears to be faced with two options: rot on the bench or leave for good.

However, according to TEAMtalk, even captain Fernandes is 'facing scrutiny.' Aged 31 and in a bit of a form slump, there is an awareness that a long-term replacement must be found. Mainoo is his current heir apparent, but this could become a moot point if he leaves in January.

While it is not explicitly stated that Man Utd will look to sell Fernandes next year, it is claimed that they could be ready to offload him if a suitable offer arrives. Fernandes has been fielding interest from Saudi Arabia for three years.

There is one major issue in the Fernandes case as far as Man Utd and their desire to get planning security is concerned. The midfielder insists that he will think about his future until after the 2026 World Cup, so it would be futile to make predictions in mid-November.
