Chelsea star Marc Cucurella has admitted that he is still 'hurt' by the fact that he was not given a proper chance at Barcelona after getting revenge in the Champions League.

The Spain international has overcome his early struggles at Stamford Bridge to become one of the most crucial players in Enzo Maresca's system. Cucurella is now a Conference League and Club World Cup winner with Chelsea and a European champion with his country.

In mid-week, things came full circle for the 27-year-old when he took on his youth club Barcelona in the Champions League, with Chelsea running out comfortable 3-0 winners.

For the full-back, it must have felt like a bit of revenge on the club, which sold him to Getafe in 2020 without ever giving him a real chance to impress in the first team.

In hindsight, this was a significant blunder from club chiefs as Cucurella enjoyed a meteoric rise after leaving. Just a year after his permanent move to Getafe, he was sold to Brighton and then to Chelsea the following year.

Cucurella still 'hurt' by Barcelona exit

On 1 December, Informe Plus will launch a show with Cucurella, and a first preview has been released in which the full-back discusses his exit from the Catalans.

Cucurella admits that he is still 'hurt' by the fact that he was not given a proper chance. However, he believes that there is a silver lining: he may not have achieved the same levels of success had he remained at Barcelona.

“Not being given the opportunity hurts a little," he said. "I felt bad, but it helped me grow a lot. Perhaps, if the decision had been different, I wouldn’t have achieved everything I have now."

Former Barca Atletic coach Gerard Lopez believes that the club made a huge mistake letting Cucurella and Alejandro Grimaldo, another left-back who has achieved considerable success, leave.

“In club meetings, planning sessions, and discussions about options for young players to move up to the first team, I always defended him," he claimed. "Just like I did with Grimaldo. I was convinced that either of them could do it.”
