Arsenal chase €80m superstar after Man Utd exit
Arsenal are reportedly among the clubs interested in bringing Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay back to the Premier League in 2026.
The Scotland international, who scored a stunning bicycle kick to help his nation qualify for the World Cup on Tuesday, has enjoyed a stellar stint in Serie A and he could be set to return to England next year.
McTominay scored 12 goals and provided six assists in the league as Napoli won the Scudetto last campaign, with his exploits earning him the Serie A Player of the Season award and an 18th place finish in the 2025 Ballon d’Or ranking.
The 28-year-old’s contract with Napoli isn’t due to expire until 2028, however rumours of a move back to the Premier League have intensified in recent weeks following reports that Antonio Conte could leave his role with the Serie A side.
Spanish publication Fichajes claim that Everton are ready to submit a club record €70 million offer for McTominay, and TEAMtalk now state that several other Premier League clubs are keeping close tabs on the Scotland star.
In fact, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have both reportedly contacted McTominay’s camp, while his former club Manchester United have also sounded out the 28-year-old as they look to re-sign the midfielder.
The Napoli star boasts an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €55.3m, but TEAMtalk claim that a fee of at least €80m will be needed to finalise a deal next year.
Arsenal already have a stacked midfield roster of Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino, Eberechi Eze and Ethan Nwaneri, but McTominay has seemingly emerged as a surprise transfer target for 2026 amid their pursuit of additional reinforcements.
Antonio Conte heaps praise on Scott McTominay
McTominay divided opinion during his time at Man Utd, although Napoli boss Conte believes his star midfielder has improved significantly since his arrival in Serie A last summer.
Speaking to reporters back in May, Conte admitted: “I think McTominay is stronger today than when he arrived from United.
“Here he has grown a lot. I think that he himself feels stronger, with more knowledge, that he is also reaching an important stage of his age to understand where to go in his career because up to now he has been in the middle.
“He has never had a main role at United that instead we have given him here, he has grown a lot by working, today he is complete.”
