Arsenal are leading the race for Borussia Dortmund winger and Manchester United target Karim Adeyemi, according to a report.

The Germany international has hit the headlines over the past 24 hours as links to the Premier League have resurfaced. Adeyemi has long been a target for England's leading clubs, but so far, no move has materialised.

It has been claimed in the German press that Man Utd have 'enquired' about the 23-year-old amid ongoing talks with Borussia Dortmund over a new contract. Adeyemi's agent Jorge Mendes is said to be pushing for an €80 million release clause.

Now, TEAMtalk asserts that Arsenal have not only entered the race for the explosive winger, but the Gunners are said to be leading the charge for him.

The report claims that the North London giants view Adeyemi as a 'player who can rival Noni Madueke for the role of Bukayo Saka’s understudy.' Having two right wingers who are not guaranteed starters worth €80m and €56m, respectively, would be quite the luxury.

What's behind the Adeyemi rumours?

The truth, however, is that these Adeyemi rumours need to be taken with a massive pinch of salt. The 23-year-old has had ample opportunity to leave Dortmund in the past and always wanted to stay.

This stance hasn't changed despite claims of a 'bust-up' with coach Niko Kovac. Adeyemi was very keen to enter contract talks with the Bundesliga side as he is very settled in Dortmund.

Journalist Ben Jacobs believes that these transfer stories are now being pushed in the media by Jorge Mendes to put pressure on Dortmund to give in to the superagent's demands.

"Some of it, I sense, is games to try and allow Jorge Mendes to get the best possible deal over an extension as well, which, even though they're not close to, should not be discounted," Jacobs told The United Stand.

"There's nothing that's going to happen there mid-season, and I think we have to be really cautious because Mendes is simultaneously offering the player around, including to Man Utd, and not ruling out an extension at Dortmund.

"Usually, when those two different scenarios are spinning simultaneously, clubs are just a little bit reticent that maybe they're being used as part of a game to get the best possible deal on an ultimate extension."
