Manchester United are ready to take advantage over the uncertainty surrounding Karim Adeyemi’s future after the Dortmund star had a bust up with manager Niko Kovac.

Adeyemi was criticised by Kovac over his behaviour after throwing a bottle at the bench following his substitution in Dortmund’s win over Koln last month and the 23-year-old’s performance against Hamburg last weekend led to visible frustration from his manager on the sideline.

German outlet BILD has now claimed that talks are ‘in full swing’ over Adeyemi’s long-term future at Dortmund, with his contract set to expire in 2027, although the player’s agent Jorge Mendes is said to be pushing for a new deal with a €80 million release clause.

Dortmund are reluctant to include a release clause in any deal and they could instead look to sell Adeyemi in the coming months, with United considered frontrunners due to their relationship with Mendes.

United are said to have been alerted to Adeyemi’s situation by Mendes, who has seen his clients such as Leny Yoro and Manuel Ugarte make the move Old Trafford in recent years.

Adeyemi has scored three times in all competitions for Dortmund this season but the forward is on a run of eight appearances without a goal amid the tension between him and Kovac.

Kovac criticises ‘unnecessary’ Adeyemi conduct

Speaking after Adeyemi’s outburst to being substituted last month, Kovac criticised his player’s response, saying: “I think it’s unnecessary. It's okay that he can be angry sometimes, but that's unnecessary, he's an adult.”

Kovac also was asked about Adeyemi’s conduct following Dortmund’s 4-1 loss to Manchester City in the Champions League in October, to which he replied: "That’s an internal matter.

"We have a special relationship. Offensively, he played a good game. He needs to reward himself for his play more often because he had two or three really good chances.

“Note that, at the other end [Manchester City’s] Phil Foden converted similar chances. I wish he could have done the same, but he didn’t.

“Karim is 23 years old, he has a lot of potential and needs to improve on some things. But that's what we are working on."
