Viktor Gyokeres might not have enjoyed the most spectacular of starts at Arsenal, but club-mate Gabriel Martinelli still believes he is capable of scoring 40 times in his debut season.

Gyokeres has three goals in his first nine outings for the Gunners since making a high-profile €66m move in the summer – and Martinelli believes that it’s only the start for the 27-year-old hitman.

The Brazilian scored the opener as Arsenal recorded a 2-0 win over Olympiakos in the Champions League on Wednesday, a fixture in which the No.9 was found to be wasteful in front of goal.

Despite not finding his shooting boots yet, Gyokeres, who has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €80m, has been backed to hit an astonishing number of goals before the season is out.

Odegaard backed to unlock Gyokeres

Martinelli believes that Martin Odegaard can be the secret behind unlocking the Swede. The pair have not played regularly together yet but struck up a good understanding against Olympiacos, with the former Real Madrid man central to Gyokeres’ best moments.

“It’s really good to play with Martin there because he’s always trying to find you, when we make the movement. And for Victor as well, his qualities as well, as he likes to go in behind and attack the opposition’s box,” Martinelli said.

“I think him playing with Martin as well is going to be good for him. We are going to try to give him the ball as much as possible to make him score, I don't know, 30 or 40 goals a season.

“We are really happy with him, we trust him, we know his qualities and he’s one of the top strikers in the world right now. We trust him and we are trying to give him the confidence to score and to do his best on the pitch to help us.”

Gyokeres scored 54 goals in 52 appearances for Sporting last term, and once he is up and running in North London, his Arsenal colleagues expect another strong return at the Emirates.
