Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is emerging as the clear favourite for the Rangers job following Steven Gerrard's surprising decision to remove himself from contention.

The international break is slowly drawing to a close, and the Ibrox club have yet to appoint a replacement for Russell Martin, who was recently sacked following a 1-1 draw with Falkirk.

Steven Gerrard had been the frontrunner for the job, holding positive talks with club bosses in London last week. However, at the weekend, it surprisingly emerged that the Liverpool legend had pulled out of the race for the vacant head coaching gig at Rangers.

The 45-year-old, who won the Premiership with the Gers in 2021, felt that the time wasn't right to return to Glasgow. Gerrard is still settled with his family in Bahrain, where he moved during his coaching spell at Saudi club Al-Ettifaq.

According to TEAMtalk, Danny Rohl is now the favourite for the job. Already last week, reports revealed that the former Sheffield Wednesday tactician had left Rangers chiefs impressed.

Potter, O'Neil also sounded out by Rangers

Rohl, who has been keen on a big job since his summer exit from turmoil-stricken Wednesday, looks poised to win the race for the position, although other high-profile names have also been contacted.

Sean Dyche was one of the early favourites, but he made it clear that he had no interest in taking the job. Fellow former Premier League bosses Gary O'Neil and Graham Potter have been interviewed as well.

With Rohl now in pole position, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano expects a final decision to be made 'imminently.' He told GIVEMESPORT: "It’s in negotiations, talks are taking place. Rangers are expected to make a decision imminently."

Rangers legend Ally McCoist believes that someone who 'gets the club' should be hired, although he made sure to emphasise that it doesn't necessarily have to be the head coach.

"I think the Rangers fans clearly want a good coach and a good manager in, but I think just as important, they need someone in the club who gets it," he said on talkSPORT. "It doesn’t need to be the manager, but they need someone within the club who knows what it’s about."

Hearts boss Derek McInness or St Mirren's Stephen Robinson should definitely be under consideration, according to McCoist. "There’s nobody in Scotland who knows the Scottish game better than Derek. The job Stephen Robinson has done at St Mirren has been remarkable," McCoist explained.
