Not Gerrard: Rangers bosses 'impressed' by manager during talks
Former Sheffield Wednesday coach Danny Rohl has impressed Rangers' club hierarchy in their managerial search, according to Sky Sports.
Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers are in the midst of a thorough hunt for a new head coach after sacking Russell Martin just 123 days into the job. The 39-year-old was let go after a 1-1 draw with Falkirk last weekend.
Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has emerged as the favourite for the job, having already been sounded out before Martin was appointed in the summer. At the time, the Liverpool legend was reluctant to return to Ibrox, but he has since changed his stance.
The 45-year-old, who won the Premiership with Rangers in 2021, has held very positive talks with club chiefs in recent days, and reports on Friday stated a full agreement was close.
Sky Sports now reports that Gerrard would bring back Gary McAllister and Jermaine Defoe as part of his backroom staff. Steve Holland is also in the frame for a role at Ibrox.
Gerrard not the only option
While the report confirms that progress has been achieved in discussions with Gerrard, it emphasises that claims of a final decision having already been made are premature.
The race for the vacant position remains open, and several other candidates are still in the frame. Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is explicitly named as having left club bosses 'impressed' during the process.
The German was already in the running in the summer, and he was also sounded out by Southampton before they settled on Will Still. Rohl worked miracles at Wednesday, considering the turmoil that they have been in in recent years.
The 36-year-old ultimately quit the Hillsborough club due to a rift with owner Dejphon Chansiri. The Owls were hit with a third transfer embargo in the summer, and problems with unpaid wages persist to this day.
