Newcastle are concretely interested in re-signing Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson after their reluctant sale last year, according to a report.

The 22-year-old has emerged as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League since leaving boyhood club Newcastle for Nottingham Forest in 2024.

Anderson is now a full-fledged England international, and Magpies boss Eddie Howe has made no secret of the fact that he still laments having been forced to sell him due to financial regulations.

Speaking at a press conference earlier this month, Howe said that he would love to welcome Anderson back to Newcastle in the future, and according to TEAMtalk, the St. James' Park club are actively exploring whether it would be possible to bring him back in 2026.

However, there is an awareness that this would be a hugely challenging - and expensive - undertaking. Not only has Anderson's value skyrocketed since leaving, but he is also being courted by Man Utd and others.

Newcastle, Man Utd have alternative targets

After this year's summer of strikers, 2026 is shaping up to be the summer of midfielders, with several elite clubs in the market for reinforcements for the centre of the park.

Anderson is expected to be one of the names involved in the merry-go-round, but he is not the only target for the likes of Man Utd and Newcastle. The former also hold a well-publicised interest in Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton.

According to transfer expert Gianluca di Marzio, Morten Hjulmand could also become an option for Man Utd. Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim 'loves' the Dane after coaching him at Sporting CP.

As for Newcastle, they are long-standing admirers of Inter star Davide Frattesi. Intriguingly, they could be handed an opportunity to already land him in January as he has struggled for minutes under new boss Cristian Chivu. Calciomercato reports that he could be sold in the winter.

The future of Anderson remains uncertain. A return to Newcastle is deemed 'improbable but not impossible,' while Forest boss Evangelos Marinakis will surely try to do everything in his power to keep hold of him, as he did with Morgan Gibbs-White this summer.
