Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has seemingly poured cold water on suggestions that Marc Guiu could rejoin Sunderland during the January transfer window.

The Spain U21 international completed a loan move to Regis Le Bris’ side in early August, however he was recalled by Chelsea on Transfer Deadline Day following a hamstring injury suffered by Liam Delap during their 2-0 victory over Fulham.

Guiu initially struggled to force his way into starting XI contention after returning to Stamford Bridge, with summer signing Joao Pedro and academy star Tyrique George instead favoured by Maresca, and this led to speculation that he could leave in January.

The ex-Barcelona striker was reportedly “increasingly frustrated” by his lack of game time at Chelsea and was eager to rejoin Sunderland on loan during the mid-season transfer window.

However, these rumours were quickly quashed by various journalists, and Maresca has now revealed the true reason behind Guiu’s lack of action following his return to Chelsea on 1 September.

Enzo Maresca on Marc Guiu

“I had a chat with Marc two weeks ago,” Maresca told reporters during his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s clash against Sunderland on Saturday. “I told him I didn't like the way he was training and he needed to change. It changed and he got the chance.

“He was not training well, in all the ways. I don't know why, but that's sometimes the way with young ones and you need to go slowly with them.

“Since we chatted, it is top and fantastic and he is working very well. He is ready to start.”

Guiu has now featured in each of Chelsea’s last three matches across all competitions and he scored his first goal of the season for the Blues during their 5-1 win over Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

The aforementioned Delap is now back in team training and will provide competition for Guiu once he returns to full match sharpness, however the Spaniard is in line to earn his first ever Premier League start versus Sunderland this weekend.
