Chelsea in transfer 'conspiracy theory': It's too convincing to be untrue!
Chelsea supporters have come up with a 'conspiracy theory' that explains why Enzo Maresca is not giving Marc Guiu any game time.
The Spaniard has yet to make an appearance for the Blues this season after a tumultuous transfer window. Having struggled to break into Maresca's squad last term, Guiu looked set to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer.
In fact, he did leave Chelsea, joining promoted Premier League outfit Sunderland on loan. However, he was recalled just 25 days after making his move due to Liam Delap suffering a long-term injury.
Chelsea, who needed to end the window with a positive balance to comply with the settlement that was reached after they breached UEFA's spending rules, were reluctant to dip into the market for a replacement for Delap.
However, since his return, Guiu has only made four matchday squads and so far played zero minutes of football. On Tuesday, Maresca opted to start Tyrique George over the 19-year-old against Benfica.
Chelsea fans launch 'conspiracy theory'
Chelsea fans on social media believe they know why Guiu is not seeing any action. Before he returned to Chelsea, he made three appearances for Sunderland, which means that he can only play competitively for one more club this season, as per FIFA rules.
This means that Chelsea can't use him if they plan to move him on in January, and supporters are convinced that Guiu will be traded for Strasbourg striker Emanuel Emegha in the upcoming window.
Chelsea recently announced the signing of the Dutchman for 2026, but they did not specify whether he will join in the winter or the summer. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has reported that the West London club have yet to decide when to add Emegha.
This 'conspiracy theory' seems quite believable, although Maresca recently suggested that Guiu would be given opportunities. "Marc is working well, and for sure, he’s going to get some chances," the Italian said last week.
Should Chelsea indeed decide to exchange Guiu for Emegha, it would surely spark more outrage at Strasbourg, where fans have been vehemently protesting against the BlueCo regime since the Dutch striker's move was announced.
After the deal was confirmed, Emegha was branded a 'BlueCo pawn' and instructed to surrender his captaincy, while president Marc Keller was told to resign. Strasbourg's biggest fan groups stopped supporting the team after the club implemented measures to 'censor' dissent.
