Manchester United will not sack Ruben Amorim, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe has informed the 40-year-old that qualification for European football is a must.

The Portuguese is under intense pressure and scrutiny following a horrid start to the season. Despite reaching last year's Europa League final, Amorim's time in charge has so far been a major disappointment.

Reports have increasingly claimed that Amorim could be sacked before he even completes a full year in the job, although this would be quite costly for Man Utd due to a clause in his contract.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe was in attendance as Man Utd were dispatched 3-0 by rivals Man City on Sunday, and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano interpreted this as a 'clear message.'

He later revealed that an 'emergency' meeting took place on Thursday between the INEOS chief and Amorim to discuss the current situation and the coach's future.

Amorim must deliver European football

Ben Jacobs has now revealed what transpired during this discussion, which had been scheduled for Thursday even before the Manchester Derby defeat.

The journalist reports that Amorim was told by Ratcliffe that he must deliver European football this season to stay in the job, although it was not specified that the competition in question has to be the Champions League.

Ratcliffe nevertheless believes that the current squad should be capable of a top-five finish. Amorim retains the backing of INEOS and of the majority of the dressing room.

Jacobs has also confirmed Romano's reporting that Man Utd have not sounded any external or internal replacements for Amorim at this stage. Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner have been touted as potential successors in the media.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Amorim joked about the meeting: “He [Ratcliffe] offered me a new contract! No, it was normal things just to show the support, explain it’s a long season. This is a club with more pressure, maybe than any in the world."
