Man Utd outline €245m transfer shortlist as Amorim targets January spending spree
Manchester United have reportedly outlined a three-man transfer shortlist as they look to sign a new central midfielder during the January window.
The Red Devils failed to bolster their options in the middle of the park this summer, despite Ruben Amorim’s desire to bring at least one new option to the club, and they are set to revisit this area in January.
Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have started in a double pivot in all three of Man Utd’s Premier League fixtures so far this term, but Amorim is desperate to sign a new midfielder to provide competition amid the uncertain futures of Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo.
In fact, TEAMtalk claim that Man Utd have already identified three key midfield targets ahead of the January transfer window.
Which midfielders do Man Utd want to sign in January?
Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton has been earmarked as the Red Devils’ dream target amid his immense form at Selhurst Park over the past year. However, Oliver Glasner’s side are determined to retain the England midfielder until at least next summer and Man Utd could be forced to break their transfer record if they want to sign him in January.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba also remains “firmly on Man Utd’s radar” after their failed pursuit this summer, with TEAMtalk reporting that a renewed mid-season bid is on the cards.
Finally, Man Utd are also reportedly weighing up a surprise move for Al-Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves.
The former Wolverhampton Wanderers star is eager to return to Europe and Man Utd retain long-term interest in the 28-year-old, having regularly scouted him during his successful stint at Molineux.
Neves has less than one year remaining on his current contract at Al-Hilal and Man Utd are contemplating whether or not to lodge a concrete proposal during the January transfer window as they look to sign a replacement for the aforementioned Casemiro.
The Portugal international is likely to be the cheapest option available to Man Utd, with his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently sitting at just €15.4 million. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace and Brighton are both set to demand at least €115m (£100m) for Wharton and Baleba respectively.
