Fabrizio Romano has admitted that Ruben Amorim's job is not safe but has dampened rumours that Gareth Southgate is set to replace him as Man Utd manager.

The current Man Utd boss is at risk of losing his job at Old Trafford after a disastrous start to the season was compounded by a 3-1 defeat to Brentford in London on Sunday.

There have been reports that Amorim is imminently at risk of the sack, with former England manager Southgate leading the race to succeed him.

Romano has now provided a state of play on the whole situation.

What did Romano say?

"According to my sources there has been no face to face meeting, direct contact or negotiation between Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Gareth Southgate,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

“The relationship between people at INEOS and Southgate is very good but I am not aware of any proposal or negotiation for Southgate.

“Man Utd are still respecting Amorim and waiting for improvements.

“Ruben Amorim’s job is not absolutely safe. They need to perform in a better way but that doesn’t mean that Man Utd have met with Southgate or started the process to appoint him.

“But for sure the next games will be crucial for Amorim.”

Southgate is out of work after leaving the England national team in the summer of 2024.

He announced his departure from England after Euro 2024 following eight years in the job.

The former defender made the decision after losing 2-1 in the final of Euro 2024 against Spain. That result signalled back-to-back final defeats in the Euros.

Despite heavy criticism over Southgate’s playing style and whether he maximised the ability of his England players, his results were consistently excellent over his eight years with England.

In four major tournaments he oversaw, England reached two finals, a semi-final and a quarter final.

Southgate is highly respected by Man Utd part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who considered the coach his number one choice to replace Erik ten Hag last year.

As for Amorim, he has struggled to replicate the job he done at Sporting Lisbon.

As coach of Sporting Lisbon, he led the team to five trophies - including two Portuguese Primeira Liga titles.

He also helped develop a host of talented players, including new Arsenal signing Viktor Gyokeres.

But Amorim has failed badly to replicate his success at Sporting at Man Utd.

United finished the 2024-25 season in 15th position, failed to win a trophy and endured arguably the worst campaign in the club's history for over 50 years.

The 40-year-old has one of the worst win percentages in Man Utd's history and the poor start to the new season which sees them well off the pace in the Premier League and knocked out of the EFL Cup by fourth division Grimsby has only added to the pressure.
