Marc Guehi deal OFF Oliver as Glasner threatens to QUIT Palace
Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi will not join Liverpool despite a deal sheet having been submitted in a stunning turn of events.
The defender has been the subject of one of the craziest sagas of the summer, with the story reaching an unsatisfactory conclusion as far as Liverpool and the player are concerned.
The Reds had been in talks with Crystal Palace for weeks, but any deal for Guehi was dependent on an adequate replacement being found. With the end of the window drawing closer, this proved increasingly difficult.
Earlier on Deadline Day, it seemed as though Palace had managed to find a suitable player after all, with Brighton defender Igor undergoing a medical after a loan agreement was reached.
However, this deal collapsed when West Ham entered the race. The player opted to join the Hammers due to better prospects of playing time, leaving Palace with no time to source an alternative.
Despite Fabrizio Romano announcing the Guehi move as a 'Here We Go!' the situation reversed as Palace boss Oliver Glasner threatened to quit over the situation, according to Chris Williams on X.
Guehi deal collapses
This left Liverpool fretting over their deal for Guehi, which had been fully agreed with Palace. A €40 million fee was to be paid to the Eagles, and the England defender had already completed his medical.
A lengthy discussion between the Palace hierarchy, head coach Oliver Glasner and Guehi was held following Igor's decision, with some believing that the club would still sanction the captain's exit even without a replacement coming in.
However, this hope was misplaced as David Ornstein now reports that Guehi's move to Liverpool is officially off, with Palace having decided not to risk being left short on centre-back options.
This decision comes despite the fact that a deal sheet was submitted before the deadline passed, giving the clubs two more hours to complete this transfer. A deal sheet can only be granted if both clubs sign off on it, suggesting that Palace were undecided as to what to do about the Guehi situation until the last minute.
Ultimately, they have opted to play it safe from a sporting point of view and have instead risked missing out on a significant financial windfall as Guehi will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with suitors in January.
