Liverpool make unexpected U-turn on star after Guehi agreement
Liverpool will not sell Joe Gomez despite their agreement with Crystal Palace to sign Marc Guehi.
The Reds have managed to get the green light from Eagles boss Steve Parish to proceed with the signing of Guehi, with Crystal Palace set to sign Igor and Jaydee Canvot as replacements.
The England star has already completed his medical in London ahead of his transfer to Liverpool. In a surprising twist, however, Guehi's arrival at Anfield will not push Joe Gomez out of the club.
It had been widely expected that the versatile defender would be allowed to leave the club once the deal to sign Guehi is wrapped up, but Sky Sports and The Athletic now report that Gomez will not depart Merseyside this summer.
This is a repeat of last summer when Gomez explored a late move away from Liverpool only to be brought back into the fold when no exit agreement could be reached.
Gomez to stay at Liverpool despite talks
Several clubs have enquired about the availability of Gomez in recent days, and it looked as though his future may lie in Italy, where Serie A giants AC Milan had held lengthy talks with Liverpool.
However, the two clubs have realised that there is not enough time in the window agree a deal and to have Gomez complete his medical, so the discussions were ended.
Crystal Palace also enquired about the long-serving Reds defender during the talks over Guehi, but nothing came of this. It has now emerged that Brighton have explored a deal as well.
Liverpool were only prepared to let Gomez leave on a permanent deal and they will now keep him for at least six more months. The 28-year-old is under contract until 2027 and has been with Liverpool since 2015.
