Liverpool STUNNED as Guehi makes huge u-turn over transfer
Marc Guehi has reportedly made a shock decision over his future after the Crystal Palace captain saw a move to Liverpool collapse on deadline day during the summer transfer window.
Guehi had agreed to join Liverpool for €40 million but Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the move at the last second due to their failure to find a replacement before the window closed.
The situation meant Guehi is now expected to leave Palace on a free transfer next summer when his contract expires unless the club choose to cash in on him in January.
Guehi’s availability for a cut-price has attracted the interest of more teams including Real Madrid, who are ‘poised’ to enter negotiations for him according to The Mirror.
And, with Real having an advantage over English clubs by being able to engage with Guehi over a pre-contract agreement from January, Liverpool could see their number one defensive target end up away from Anfield next summer.
The report claims that Guehi’s ‘number one choice’ is to move to Real, with the 25-year-old said to be ‘excited’ by the prospect of playing abroad for the Spanish giants.
Real Madrid set to play huge part in Liverpool’s defensive plans
Guehi’s preference to join Real could be a double blow for Arne Slot, with Liverpool also likely to lose Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer as the Frenchman also runs down his contract at Anfield.
Like Guehi, Konate is in the final year of his contract and has been pursued by Real, who are hoping to see the Frenchman emulate former Red Trent Alexander-Arnold by switching Liverpool for Madrid on a free transfer.
It is perhaps unlikely that Real would sign both Guehi and Konate and it remains to be seen which defender, if any, that they move for next summer.
Liverpool are aware that Real would look to sign Konate if he continues to resist talks of an extension and would hope that the Spaniards moving for the 26-year-old would at least allow them to sign Guehi as a replacement.
However, the worst case scenario could be Real signing Guehi and Konate still opting to leave Liverpool, with Paris Saint-Germain among the other sides interested in the Frenchman’s signature on a free.
